What is Mommy Makeover?

Despite the name, a “mommy makeover” isn’t just for moms — it’s for anyone who wants to restore their body and boost their self-confidence. At Metropolitan Plastic Surgery, we often call it a confidence makeover, because it’s about how you feel, not just where you’ve been.

A confidence makeover typically includes a combination of breast and body contouring procedures, tailored to your individual goals. Common combinations include:

Everyone’s body and goals are different, which is why no two confidence makeovers are the same. Whether you’ve experienced physical changes from pregnancy, weight fluctuations, or simply want to look as vibrant as you feel, this fully customizable procedure can help you reclaim your shape — and your sense of self.

Preparing for Mommy Makeover Surgery

Before your procedure, you’ll meet with Dr. Victoria Aimé for a personalized consultation. During this appointment, she’ll review your medical history, perform a physical exam, and discuss your specific areas of concern and aesthetic goals. Based on your needs, Dr. Aimé will recommend a tailored surgical plan to help you feel confident in your skin again.

You’ll return for a preoperative appointment to review the finalized surgical plan and address any remaining questions. Depending on your health history, lab work or clearance from your primary care provider may be required. If you’re age 40 or older, a mammogram will be necessary prior to any breast surgery.

To ensure your safety and optimize healing:

  • Stop all nicotine products (including vaping, patches, and gum) at least 6 weeks before and after surgery
  • Adjust or discontinue certain medications or supplements under Dr. Aimé’s guidance
  • These steps are essential to minimize the risk of complications and support optimal wound healing.

The Mommy Makeover Procedure

A confidence makeover is a highly customizable combination of procedures typically targeting the breasts, abdomen, and fat distribution. The exact approach is designed based on your anatomy and personal goals.

Breast Procedures

Many patients choose a breast lift, especially if their breasts feel deflated, asymmetric, or saggy after weight changes, aging, or breastfeeding.

This procedure involves:

  • An incision around the areola, vertically down to the lower breast fold, and possibly along the crease
  • Removal of loose skin and reshaping of the breast tissue
  • Repositioning of the nipple and areola for a more youthful contour
  • Optional augmentation with implants or fat transfer, performed prior to incision closure

All incisions are closed with dissolving sutures and surgical staples to support proper healing.

Body Procedures

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is often included to restore abdominal tone and flatten the midsection.

During this procedure:

  • A horizontal incision is made along the lower abdomen, with an additional incision around the belly button
  • Excess skin and fat are removed
  • Abdominal muscles are repaired and tightened (plication) to correct diastasis recti
  • The upper abdominal skin is pulled downward and secured using quilting sutures, which help reduce fluid buildup and shape the waistline

Incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures and staples designed for low visibility over time.

Liposuction & Fat Transfer

Liposuction is frequently used to refine and sculpt additional areas such as the waist, flanks, back, arms, and thighs.

  • Small, discreet incisions are made
  • Fat is removed using a vibrating cannula
  • If desired, fat can be purified and transferred to enhance areas like the buttocks, breasts, hands, or face

Fat is gently washed and treated with antibiotics before reinjection to ensure safety and longevity of results.

Recovering From Mommy Makeover

Every recovery is unique, but since a confidence makeover combines multiple procedures, expect a more involved healing process than with single-site surgeries.

Immediate Post-Op

  • Most patients return home the same day with a responsible adult for support
  • For longer surgeries (>6 hours), an overnight stay may be recommended for additional monitoring and comfort
  • Exparel, a long-acting numbing medication, is placed during surgery to ease initial discomfort
  • Prescription medications and detailed instructions will be provided to manage pain and support healing

Compression & Garments

  • You’ll receive a surgical bra to support your breasts
  • An abdominal binder is used initially and replaced by a compression garment after 1–2 weeks
  • Compression garments should be worn for 4 weeks, especially over liposuctioned areas

Activity & Nutrition

  • Walking, ankle pumps, and compression socks are encouraged right away to reduce the risk of blood clots
  • Showering is typically safe after 2–3 days (with assistance)
  • Eat plenty of calories and protein to support wound healing and energy
  • Most patients resume light activity within 1–2 weeks
  • Moderate exercise can resume around 4–6 weeks post-op, based on Dr. Aimé’s guidance
  • Plan to take at least 2 weeks off work, with 4 weeks ideal if your job involves physical activity

Mommy Makeover Recovery Timeline

Every person is unique and may have some similarities as well as differences to others in terms of their individual recovery experience. A mommy makeover is a combination of multiple procedures so it is common to have more downtime and required healing than if these procedures were performed individually.

Day of Surgery

Your recovery begins either at home with a trusted caregiver or with an overnight stay in the recovery center if your procedure is longer or more extensive. You’ll be fitted with a supportive surgical bra and an abdominal binder to promote healing. Short, gentle walks are encouraged as soon as you’re able to help boost circulation and reduce the risk of blood clots.

Days 1-3

You’ll return to Dr. Aimé’s office the day after surgery for your first post-op visit, where you’ll be guided through dressing changes and incision care. Discomfort is managed with prescribed medications while your body begins to adjust. Light walking within your home is encouraged to support healing, and you’ll wear compression socks and may use sequential compression devices. Some patients are started on a short course of blood thinners. With assistance, you’ll take your first shower, begin daily dressing care, and notice normal early swelling and bruising.

Weeks 1-2

You’ll continue with daily dressing changes and showers, while swelling — which often peaks between days 2 and 4 — begins to improve. During this time, you’ll start adding light daily activities back into your routine. You’ll also come in for your one-week post-op check and again at two weeks to have external suture knots trimmed. Compression socks are still recommended to help reduce the risk of complications.

Weeks 2-4

At this stage, you’ll transition into a standard compression garment, like a girdle or faja, for continued support. Many patients begin incorporating light exercise, such as short walks outside, as tolerated. Swelling continues to subside and you’ll start seeing early improvements in body contour and shape.

Weeks 4-6

As your energy returns, moderate exercise can usually be resumed, including low-impact strength or cardio activity. Major swelling typically decreases during this period, making your new contours more visible. Dr. Aimé may advise you to begin gradually tapering out of your compression garments depending on your healing progress.

After Week 6

You can typically return to your full activity level, including regular workouts and more intense exercise. Swelling continues to resolve, and your incisions will begin to fade and soften over the next several months. Follow-up appointments at 3, 6, and 12 months help ensure long-term healing, allow for refinements if needed, and give you an opportunity to ask questions throughout your journey.
