What is Back Lift?

A back lift (also called a bra line back lift, upper body lift or a torsoplasty) is a surgical body contouring procedure designed to remove excess skin and fat from the upper back, often resulting from significant weight loss or natural aging. This procedure helps to create a smoother, tighter, and more defined back contour—especially in areas where sagging skin gathers around the bra line and upper flanks.

01

Preparing for Back Lift Surgery

Before your back lift, you’ll meet with Dr. Aimé for a personalized consultation. During this visit, she will review your medical history, perform a physical examination, and discuss your aesthetic goals and concerns in detail. Based on your anatomy and desired outcomes, Dr. Aimé will recommend the most appropriate treatment plan tailored to you.

You’ll return for a preoperative appointment prior to surgery to review your surgical plan, receive detailed instructions, and ask any final questions. Depending on your health history, lab work or medical clearance from your primary care physician may be required. In the weeks leading up to surgery, certain medications or supplements may be paused or adjusted to reduce the risk of bleeding. If you smoke or vape, it is essential to completely stop at least 4–6 weeks before and after surgery, as nicotine impairs healing and significantly increases the risk of complications.

02

Back Lift Surgical Procedure

A back lift is performed under general anesthesia and begins with an incision placed horizontally across the mid to upper back, typically extending from the midline outward, depending on how much skin needs to be removed. After identifying and excising the excess skin and tissue, absorbable sutures are used to close the incisions in layers to promote smooth healing and minimize tension.

In many cases, liposuction may be used at the beginning of the procedure to remove localized fat and enhance the overall contour before trimming excess skin. At the end of surgery, dressings and a compression garment are applied to support healing, reduce swelling, and help the skin conform to its new shape.

03

Recovering from a Back Lift

After surgery, most patients return home the same day with detailed recovery instructions. Mild to moderate soreness, swelling, and tightness are expected in the first few days but typically improve with rest and medication. You’ll be asked to wear a compression garment for several weeks to reduce swelling and support your results.

Most patients can resume light daily activities within 1 to 2 weeks, but you should avoid strenuous exercise or heavy lifting until cleared by Dr. Aimé—usually around 3 to 4 weeks post-op. Keeping your incisions clean and dry, avoiding smoking, and attending all scheduled follow-ups will help ensure optimal healing and the best possible result. As swelling subsides, you’ll begin to see a smoother, firmer contour through your upper and mid-back, with scarring that fades over time and is typically hidden beneath a bra or swimwear.

“I recently underwent a submentoplasty procedure performed by the incredibly talented plastic surgeon, Dr Aimé. My decision to have submentoplasty was not taken lightly and Dr Aimé made sure to thoroughly explain the entire procedure to me during our consultation.”
