What is Fat Transfer to Breasts?

Fat transfer breast augmentation—also known as autologous fat grafting—is a natural alternative to breast implants. Using gentle liposuction, fat is harvested from areas such as the abdomen, flanks, or thighs, then purified and carefully injected into the breasts. This technique subtly enhances breast shape and volume while using your own tissue, resulting in a look and feel that is authentically you.

Preparing for Fat Transfer to Breasts Surgery

During your consultation with Dr. Aimé, you’ll discuss your aesthetic goals and areas of concern. A physical exam will help determine the best donor sites for fat harvesting, as well as the volume of fat that can safely and effectively be transferred to the breasts.

You’ll also review the benefits and limitations of fat transfer compared to implants. If you choose to proceed, a preoperative appointment will cover your surgical plan, the areas for liposuction, your desired breast size, and what to expect during recovery.

If you’re 40 or older, a current screening mammogram will be required before surgery. Dr. Aimé may also recommend pausing certain medications or supplements that increase bleeding risk. Smoking or any nicotine use must be stopped at least 6 weeks before and after surgery to promote healing and maximize fat graft survival.

Fat Transfer to Breasts Procedure

Fat grafting to the breasts begins with gentle liposuction to harvest fat from selected areas (typically the abdomen, flanks, or thighs although any site with excess fat can be utilized). Small, discreet incisions are placed in natural folds and along garment lines. A numbing solution is first injected to minimize bleeding and make fat removal easier.

The harvested fat is then filtered and washed in preparation for transfer. Using small cannulas, Dr. Aimé meticulously transfers the fat into the breasts, usually through tiny incisions in the lower breast crease and upper edge of the areola.

Fat is placed in around the breast gland to ensure smooth contours and reliable graft take. A portion of the fat will naturally resorb over time, which is factored into the amount initially injected.

Description needed to go hereRecovery after fat transfer is typically well tolerated.

  • Swelling and bruising are common in both the liposuction and breast areas.
  • Compression garments are worn for 2 weeks over the liposuction sites to reduce swelling and support healing.
  • A supportive (but non-compressive) surgical bra is recommended for the breasts for 4-6 weeks.

Mild to moderate soreness is expected and is usually manageable with over-the-counter or prescribed medications. Most patients feel comfortable returning to normal daily activities within a few days, with strenuous exercise resumed in 4-6 weeks.

The breasts may initially appear more conical or firm but will soften and round out as the tissue adjusts and swelling resolves. Final results are typically visible by 3–6 months as the fat stabilizes and the breast tissue fully accommodates the graft.
