Fat Transfer to Breasts
Fat transfer breast augmentation enhances breast size and shape by using your own fat, harvested from other areas of your body, for a soft, natural result.

Fat transfer breast augmentation—also known as autologous fat grafting—is a natural alternative to breast implants. Using gentle liposuction, fat is harvested from areas such as the abdomen, flanks, or thighs, then purified and carefully injected into the breasts. This technique subtly enhances breast shape and volume while using your own tissue, resulting in a look and feel that is authentically you.

Frequently Asked Questions
We’ve gathered answers to some of the most common questions our patients ask about this procedure. Whether you’re just starting your research or preparing for surgery, this section is here to help you feel informed and confident every step of the way.
If you’re 40 or older, or if you have personal or family risk factors for breast cancer, I typically recommend a recent mammogram before surgery. This isn’t because fat transfer is known to cause cancer—but to establish a clear baseline for your breast health and to follow standard screening guidelines.
Fat transfer can create small oil cysts or calcifications as the body absorbs or remodels the grafted fat. These changes are benign and can be recognized by an experienced radiologist. It’s important to tell your mammography center and radiologist you’ve had fat grafting so they can interpret your images appropriately.
Fat grafting does not prevent you from getting mammograms or breast cancer screenings in the future.
No. Current research shows no evidence that fat grafting to the breast increases the risk of breast cancer or causes cancer to develop. This has been confirmed by multiple studies and is considered safe in properly selected patients.
While early concerns were raised about the theoretical effect of fat-derived stem cells, long-term data has not shown any link to cancer development.
Fat transfer can be an excellent option for modest breast volume enhancement and natural contouring. However, it typically cannot match the larger volume changes possible with implants in a single session. Generally, an increase in volume of about one cup size is achievable with fat transfer to the breasts.
Yes. Because transferred fat becomes living tissue in your breasts, it will respond to overall weight changes just like other body fat. Significant weight loss can reduce the volume of grafted fat over time.
We recommend maintaining a stable, healthy weight to preserve your results.
Fat cells are living cells and must grow in a blood supply where they are transferred in order to survive. We call this fat graft "take." Typical fat graft take rates are approximately 50%, but can be more or less. Generally, the final amount of fat graft take is evident by about three months after surgery
In order to provide the best opportunity for freshly transferred fat cells to take, you will be given a set of post-op instructions. In general, pressure and overly tight compression should be avoided. This includes laying on the areas where fat has been transferred or wearing too tight of a bra. Rubbing and massaging of the areas where fat has been placed should also be avoided. A diet high in protein also helps with wound healing in general and is encouraged.
Yes, provided that there are other areas of fat to harvest from, fat transfer augmentation of the breasts can be done multiple times until the desired size is achieved.
