How Internal Bras (Mesh) Help Support Your Implants
Heading

If you’re considering breast augmentation or a breast lift with implants, you may have heard the term “internal bra.” But what exactly is it, and why might you want one?

What Is an Internal Bra?

An “internal bra” isn’t a bra you wear—it’s a surgical technique using a special resorbable mesh or scaffold placed inside your body. Think of it as an internal sling that supports your breast implant from the inside. Over time, your own tissue grows into and replaces the mesh as it dissolves, creating long-lasting internal reinforcement.

How Does the Internal Bra Work?

During surgery, the mesh is carefully placed like a hammock or sling to cradle the lower part of your implant. While the implant can still move naturally within the pocket for a soft, realistic feel, the mesh helps hold it in the ideal position.

This added support helps:

  • Maintain the inframammary fold (the crease under your breast)
  • Prevent the implant from “bottoming out” or sliding too low
  • Avoid implant migration onto the upper abdomen over time

Why Might You Need an Internal Bra?

While not everyone needs it, I use internal bras in most of my breast augmentation or breast lift with implant surgeries, especially in patients with:

  • Subfascial implant placement: Implants in the subfascial plane (just under the fascia over the muscle) have less natural muscular support, so added mesh support helps maintain their position.
  • Significant weight loss: Weight loss can thin out and weaken the natural breast tissue and skin, increasing the risk of stretching over time.
  • Large-volume implants: Heavier implants exert more downward pressure, which can increase the chance of bottoming out without added internal support.

By reinforcing your internal structure, the internal bra helps achieve more stable, long-lasting, and aesthetically pleasing results.

Is the Mesh Permanent?

No—the mesh typically used for internal bras is resorbable. That means your body gradually breaks it down and replaces it with your own collagen and scar tissue, leaving behind strong, integrated internal support.

Benefits of Using an Internal Bra

  • Prevents bottoming out
  • Helps maintain a defined breast fold
  • Reduces implant malposition risk
  • Improves long-term shape and symmetry
  • Supports larger implants without compromising stability
