The face and neck may accumulate excess fat, obscuring the natural beauty of the jawline and neckline. Similar to procedures performed on other areas of the body, neck liposuction, which is also called submental liposuction or chin liposuction, is designed to eliminate surplus fat, unveiling the inherent contours, shadows, and depth of the underlying face, chin, jaw, and neck. This technique can be combined with skin tightening procedures and other facial enhancements to rejuvenate and define the features above the clavicles.
Neck liposuction is best suited for men and women who are:
During your initial consultation you'll meet with Dr. Aimé to discuss your aesthetic goals, medical history, and expectations. Dr. Aimé will evaluate your candidacy for neck liposuction based on your medical history, goals and the specific characteristics of your neck and jawline including your neck's anatomy, skin elasticity, and the distribution of excess fat. She will explain the procedure in detail including inherent risk of the procedure and answer any questions you have. If you decide to move forward with neck liposuction, a surgical date will be chosen. Neck liposuction can be performed in the comfort of our office under local anesthesia or at a surgery center under general anesthesia. You may need to have labs done or see your primary care physician prior to surgery. Some medications or supplements may be adjusted in the weeks leading up to surgery to decrease the risk of bleeding. Smoking should be stopped 4 weeks prior to and following surgery. Lastly, it is important to maintain a healthy diet and exercise regimen.
This procedure can be performed either local anesthesia in the office or under general anesthesia at a surgery center. Several small incisions, are strategically placed in inconspicuous locations, such as beneath the chin or behind the ears. A numbing solution known as tumescent (a mixture of saline, lidocaine, and epinephrine) is injected into the targeted liposuction areas . This solution helps numb the area, minimize bleeding, and facilitate the fat removal process. A thin, hollow tube, called a cannula, is then inserted and moved back-and-forth in controlled motions to break up to gently remove the excess fat deposits. Dr. Aimé carefully sculpts the neck and jawline, removing fat to achieve the desired contours and definition. The procedure aims to create a harmonious and natural-looking result. The incisions are generally left open to heal. Light dressings and a compression garment are then applied. After the procedure, you will be monitored in a recovery area until you are ready to go home. Your initial follow-up appointment is typically scheduled for one week after the procedure.
Swelling and bruising are common and anticipated following this procedure. Dr. Aimé will recommend wearing a chin/neck compression garment to aid in reducing swelling and providing support to the neck skin during the healing process. Typically, this garment is worn day and night for the first 48 hours and then only night for 2 weeks. Over the counter pain medications such as Tylenol and ibuprofen are usually sufficient to alleviate any pain or discomfort. You can typically resume your regular day-to-day activities within a few days post-procedure and engage in strenuous activities, such as exercise, within 2 to 4 weeks. Most patients are usually able to return to work within two days to a week. Over the course of several months, swelling significantly diminishes, the small incision sites become inconspicuous, and the neck presents a slimmer appearance with a more defined jawline.
