Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure to enlarge breast size and shape using either implants or fat transfer. Breast augmentation with implants offers a more predictable shape and size than augmentation with fat transfer. Breast implants come in a variety of sizes (measured a volume) and degrees of projection (or roundness) which can be chosen based on your unique chest anatomy and your desired result.
Ideal breast augmentation candidates are:
Prior to your procedure, you will meet with Dr. Aimé at a preoperative appointment to discuss your surgical goals and answer any questions you have. Based on your goals and physical exam, she will discuss options for breast augmentation including augmentation with breast implants and how this differs from augmentation with fat transfer. She will also make recommendations about whether you would benefit from a breast lift at the same time (i.e. an augmentation mastopexy). If you decide to proceed forward with scheduling a breast augmentation surgery, Dr. Aimé will again meet with you during a preoperative sizing appointment where you will be able to choose your implant volume, projection, and fill (i.e. more or less cohesive silicone versus saline) as well as review the surgical plan and expected recovery.
Breast augmentation surgery with implants is performed by making an incision within the lower breast crease (also called the inframammary fold). The pocket where the breast implant will be placed is developed either below or above the muscle depending on the decided surgical plan. The breast implant is then placed into each pocket and compared from side to side for symmetry. Generally, breast implants that are 400cc or more in volume or those that are placed above the muscle maintain their position better when surgical mesh is placed at the same time to act as an internal bra. Following placement of the implants, the incisions are then closed with dissolving sutures.
After the procedure, you will be placed in a surgical recovery bra that provides some compression without putting too much pressure on the incisions. Swelling and mild bruising is common and expected. Typically, a long acting numbing medication will be injected during the procedure to help reduce pain in conjunction with medications that you will be prescribed. You will be able to return to your normal day-to-day activities within a couple of days of the procedure and strenuous activities such as exercise within 2 to 4 weeks of your procedure. Most patients are able to return to work within several days of the procedure. Breast implants typically start in a high and tight position and settle into the breast pocket over 6 - 12 weeks.
